6A: Opportunities in economic and regulatory trends

6A:
 Economic Trend: Shifting Workforce Demographics
·             I believe there could be an opportunity here because the aging US population could continue to restrain the growth of the workforce. As the baby-boom generation retires, the workforces monthly rate of expansion has decreased to below 125,000.
·             The prototypical customer are those the new generations getting jobs. However, this translates into faster labor productivity and a competitive labor market.
·             I think I saw this opportunity because with the baby boomers retiring and the rate of expansion slowing down this would be a good time to shift workforce demographics.

Economic Trend: Climate change is causing more natural disasters
·             The climate has been changing because of global warming. As we experience extremely hot days, food prices are rising. Corn and soybeans yield go down dramatically when temperatures rise above 84 degrees. Also, climate changes create violent storms and floods.
·             The prototypical customer is those who consume foods that suffer during global warming.
·             I think I saw this opportunity because the food prices are rising and people who consume these foods can’t do anything about it.

Regulatory changes: In Consumer goods (tobacco)
·             Over the last 40 years there has been a recognizable force in the regulatory and taxes from more harmful products such as tobacco. This requires a change in the level of regulatory awareness.
·             The prototypical customer is those who consume tobacco and are aware of the regulatory and taxes on these products.
·             I saw this as an opportunity because there are many consumers of tobacco who are impacted by the regulations and taxes.

Regulatory changes: Cars and planning for electric vehicles
·             Since the improvements in technology have been increasing states are trying to reduce carbon emission and utilities have been looking for a way to increase electricity sales.
·             The prototypical customer is those who have vehicles.
  • I saw this as an opportunity because there are many people who own vehicles that would be interested in reducing carbon emissions

  1. Hey Jessi!
I greatly enjoyed reading your blog post for this week! We both discussed regulatory changes in the tobacco field. I discussed Alachua county raising the purchasing age to 21 for all smoking products, while you discussed regulatory changes for tobacco in other countries. I can also strongly agree that climate change is causing more natural disasters, which is something that needs change. Overall, great job on your blog post!
